Sustainability and social impact are no longer topics reserved for large corporations or government agencies. Increasingly, association members are looking to their professional and industry organizations for leadership, guidance, and opportunities to make a meaningful difference.
For association volunteer leaders, this presents both an opportunity and a responsibility.
Today’s members want to belong to organizations that not only support their professional growth but also contribute positively to their industries, communities, and the environment. As a result, sustainability and social impact have become important considerations in strategic planning, events, education, advocacy, succession planning, and member engagement.
The good news is that meaningful progress does not require large budgets or complex initiatives. In many cases, it starts with leadership.
Leading by Example
Association volunteer leaders play an important role in setting the tone for an association’s priorities and culture. When Boards, committees, and chapter leaders champion sustainability and social impact initiatives, they signal that these efforts matter.
This can take many forms, from incorporating sustainability into strategic discussions to supporting community outreach programs, charitable partnerships, environmental initiatives, or educational programming focused on responsible business practices.
Leadership commitment often inspires broader participation from members, volunteers, sponsors, and industry partners.
Start Small and Build Momentum
One of the biggest misconceptions about sustainability is that organizations need to launch large-scale programs to make an impact.
In reality, some of the most successful initiatives begin with small, achievable actions.
Examples might include:
- • Organizing a community volunteer day or local park or shoreline clean-up event
- • Supporting a charitable organization such as Food Banks Canada through fundraising or awareness campaigns. For instance, one of our national associations holds their national convention each fall and we offer education sessions where we charge a nominal fee that is later donated to Food Banks Canada so that they use the money for local food banks.
- • Reducing waste at conferences and events by offering water stations and encouraging attendees to bring their reusable water bottles, etc.
- • Offering educational sessions on sustainability trends and best practices
- • Highlighting member companies making a positive impact within the industry
These types of initiatives not only contribute to important causes but also create meaningful opportunities for member engagement and collaboration.
Align Efforts with Member Interests
The most successful sustainability and social impact programs are those that connect directly to an association’s mission and the interests of its members.
Before launching a new initiative, volunteer leaders should consider asking:
- • What issues matter most to our members?
- • How does sustainability impact our industry?
- • Where can our association make the greatest contribution?
- • What partnerships could help amplify our efforts? A recent shoreline clean-up initiative led by one of our national association’s Sustainability Committee and British Columbia Chapter demonstrated the value of strategic partnerships. By collaborating with Ocean Wise, volunteers helped protect local shorelines while contributing important environmental data that supported ongoing education, research, and conservation efforts across Canada and beyond.
Taking the time to understand member priorities helps ensure that programs remain relevant, supported, and impactful. It also helps to ensure a broader lens is used to look at the impact of said event to ensure not only the membership benefits but also the environment.
Strengthening Member Engagement
Sustainability initiatives often provide unique opportunities for members to engage with their association beyond traditional meetings and events.
Community service projects, environmental programs, charitable campaigns, and social impact initiatives create shared experiences that bring members together around a common purpose.
These activities can strengthen relationships, foster collaboration, and help build a stronger sense of community within and outside of the association.
For many members, the opportunity to give back alongside industry peers is both rewarding and memorable.
This is also a great way to engage new association volunteer leaders by showing the breadth of opportunities and how their work can have real value and impact. For more information on best practices to engage new association volunteer leaders, check out one of my previous blogs.
Engaging the Next Generation of Association Volunteer Leaders
Sustainability and social impact initiatives can be powerful tools for engaging the next generation of association leaders. Many emerging professionals are seeking opportunities to make a meaningful difference while building connections and leadership skills.
By offering purpose-driven volunteer experiences, associations can strengthen engagement, support succession planning, and create pathways for long-term involvement. For more insights on engaging the next generation of volunteers and leaders, be sure to check out my colleague Tatiana Botero’s blog.
Measuring Impact Matters
While participation numbers are important, volunteer leaders should also consider how to measure and communicate the broader impact of their initiatives.
Whether it’s the number of volunteer hours contributed, funds raised, waste diverted, trees planted, or community organizations supported, sharing results helps demonstrate the value of these efforts.
It also provides members with tangible examples of how their involvement is making a difference.
Celebrating successes can inspire continued participation and encourage new members to get involved.
Sustainability – It’s a Never-Ending Journey. Be Sure to Embrace It.
Sustainability and social impact are not passing trends. They are becoming increasingly important considerations for members, industries, and communities alike.
Association volunteer leaders have a unique opportunity to help shape meaningful programs that align with their organization’s mission while creating positive change.
The most impactful initiatives are often those that bring people together, strengthen communities, and demonstrate leadership through action.
By embracing sustainability and social impact as part of their leadership journey, volunteer leaders can help ensure their associations remain relevant, engaged, and positioned to make a lasting difference both within their industries and beyond.
